Marshfield Insurance continues its commitment to leadership and advocacy in the independent insurance industry. Last week, Owner and Broker Nick Arnoldy traveled to Washington, D.C. to attend the 2025 Big “I” Legislative Conference — the premier national event for independent insurance agents. Representing Wisconsin as State National Director, Arnoldy joined IIAW CEO Matt Banaszynski in high-level discussions with members of Congress, including Congressman Bill Huizenga, Vice Chair of the House Financial Services Committee.
Together, they voiced strong support for policy solutions that will strengthen independent agencies, support local economies, and protect consumers.
Founded in 1896, the Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America (the Big “I”) is the nation’s oldest and largest association of independent insurance agents and brokers. Representing a network of approximately 25,000 agency locations, the Big “I” advocates for policies that ensure the continued success and competitiveness of the independent agency system.
As a dedicated member, Nick Arnoldy helped present the Big “I” 2025 legislative agenda to lawmakers on Capitol Hill.
Key legislative priorities included:
1. Tax Reform
Arnoldy called on Congress to pass the Main Street Tax Certainty Act (S.213/H.R.703), which would make the 20% small business deduction (Section 199A) permanent. This deduction is critical for independent agencies structured as pass-through entities — the vast majority of Big “I” members. He also advocated for protecting the employer tax exclusion for health insurance and preserving the tax-exempt status of trade associations.
2. Disaster Mitigation
With the rising impact of natural disasters on insurers and communities, the delegation urged support for pre-disaster mitigation legislation such as the Fix Our Forests Act and the Disaster Resiliency and Coverage Act of 2025. These measures would provide grants and tax incentives for property owners to invest in mitigation efforts. Arnoldy also pushed for long-term reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), set to expire in September.
3. Crop Insurance
Recognizing the vital role independent agents play in agricultural communities, Arnoldy and Banaszynski advocated for protecting the Federal Crop Insurance Program (FCIP). They emphasized the importance of resisting cuts or changes to this essential public-private partnership, which helps farmers manage risks and maintain food security.
Why Advocacy Matters
“Having a voice in D.C. helps ensure our industry — and our clients — are supported through sound, forward-thinking policies,” said Arnoldy. “I’m proud to represent Marshfield Insurance and Wisconsin agents as we work to protect Main Street businesses and strengthen the independent insurance model.”
