Are You Prepared for Extreme Cold?
Winter in our region is not just uncomfortable. It can be dangerous. Prolonged exposure to cold weather increases the risk of serious cold-related injuries, especially hypothermia and frostbite. Understanding the warning signs and knowing what to do can help protect you, your family, and your employees during the coldest months of the year.
Cold-related injuries often happen faster than people expect, particularly when wind, moisture, or fatigue are involved.
Understanding the Risks
Hypothermia occurs when the body’s core temperature drops below 95°F. This condition can impair thinking and coordination and may become life-threatening if not treated quickly.
Warning signs of hypothermia include:
- Shivering
- Slurred speech
- Clumsiness
- Fatigue
Frostbite results when skin and underlying tissue freeze, most often affecting fingers, toes, ears, and the nose. Without prompt care, frostbite can cause permanent tissue damage.
Warning signs of frostbite include:
- Numbness or tingling
- Pale or waxy-looking skin
- Hard or blistered areas
Prevention Starts With Preparation
Taking a few proactive steps can significantly reduce your risk of cold-related injuries:
- Dress in layers. Wear moisture-wicking base layers, insulating middle layers, and windproof or waterproof outer layers.
- Protect extremities. Use insulated gloves, thick socks, and hats that cover the ears.
- Stay dry. Wet clothing accelerates heat loss. Change out of damp clothes quickly.
- Limit exposure. Take breaks indoors to warm up and avoid prolonged exposure to extreme cold.
- Fuel your body. Eat high-energy foods and stay hydrated. Warm fluids help maintain body heat.
- Monitor the weather. Check forecasts and wind chill advisories before heading outdoors.
What to Do If Cold-Related Injuries Occur
If hypothermia is suspected:
- Move the person to a warm place
- Remove wet clothing
- Wrap them in blankets
- Seek medical attention
If frostbite occurs:
- Warm affected areas gradually using body heat or warm (not hot) water
- Avoid rubbing the affected area
- Get medical help promptly
