Selecting Effective Smoke Detectors

When selecting a smoke detector, keep the following in mind:

• Photoelectric units are better for smoldering fires, such as electrical fires in the walls. They are ideal for kitchens and bathrooms where these fires tend to occur.
• Ionization units give the surrounding air an electrical charge and measure whether the charge remains constant or if a fire consumes the oxygen in the air. These units are better suited to areas where fires may spread quickly, such as basements or near furnaces.

Taking Care of Smoke Detectors

Use these steps to ensure that your smoke detectors are working properly:

1. Press the test button on the unit and wait for it to sound.
2. Light a candle and hold it about 6 inches below the detector so that the heated air rises into the unit.
3. If the alarm doesn’t sound within 20 seconds, blow out the candle and let the smoke rise.
4. If the alarm still doesn’t sound, open the detector and clean the unit. Then test it again.
5. If the detector still isn’t working, replace it immediately.

Don’t Forget About Batteries

Replacing smoke detector batteries is critical to their effectiveness. A simple way to remember is to change the batteries twice a year during daylight saving time. When you set your clocks forward or back an hour, replace the batteries to help keep your home and family safe.
