Spring has arrived in Wisconsin, bringing with it blooming flowers, warmer days, and the return of migrating birds. But alongside these seasonal joys comes an increased risk of severe weather—tornadoes, thunderstorms, and flooding can strike quickly and unpredictably. That’s why Wisconsin observes April 7-11 as Severe Weather Awareness Week, a time to prepare and practice safety measures, including statewide tornado drills on Thursday, April 10. At Marshfield Insurance Agency, we’re proud to support this initiative and encourage our community to take steps to stay safe.
A Record Year for Tornadoes
Wisconsin Emergency Management Administrator Greg Engle emphasizes the importance of preparation: “It is essential people take time during this important week to ensure each Wisconsinite knows what to do when a tornado warning or severe storm is in their area.” Last year alone, the National Weather Service confirmed 45 tornadoes across the state in 2024—the third-highest annual total on record. May 21st stood out, with 18 tornadoes touching down in a single day. With an average of 23 tornadoes each year, it’s clear that severe weather is a reality we must all be ready to face.
How to Stay Safe
ReadyWisconsin offers practical steps to protect yourself, your family, and your property during severe weather:
Make a Plan: Create and practice an emergency plan with your household. Know where to seek shelter—at home, work, or school—such as a basement, ground-floor interior room, or a safe room built to withstand high winds.
Stay Informed: Use multiple alert sources like NOAA Weather Radios, local media, and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) on your mobile device. Check your phone’s settings to ensure WEA is enabled.
Be Weather Aware: Monitor daily forecasts for Marshfield and surrounding areas.
Build an Emergency Kit: Stock up on essentials like water, food, flashlights, and first-aid supplies. Visit readywisconsin.wi.gov for a complete checklist.
Statewide Tornado Drills: Practice Makes Perfect
On April 10, Wisconsin will hold tornado drills at 1:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. These drills are a perfect opportunity for families, schools, and businesses to practice their sheltering plans. During the drill, take a moment to move to your designated safe space as if a real tornado warning were in effect. Some communities may test outdoor sirens, and the National Weather Service will conduct NOAA Weather Radio tests—great tools to ensure your alert systems are working.
Note: If severe weather threatens the state on April 10, the drills will shift to April 11. If storms persist, they’ll be canceled. Check readywisconsin.wi.gov by 10 a.m. on April 10 for updates.
